The Holy Trinity

God is one. The one God is eternally self-existent in three persons: the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. (Deuteronomy 6:4-5, Mathew 28:1-19). These three distinct entities act as one and represent the sovereignty of YAHWEH.

Deuteronomy 6:4-5(K.J.V) Hear, O Israel: The LORD our God [is] one LORD:

The deity of the Christian faith has been a source of massive debates across many platforms. How can God be three in one? Well, that is a profound question.

YAHWEH

Scripture tells us that there is God the Father who is first encountered in the book of Genesis; the first book of the Bible. Abraham was to sacrifice His only Son to show his allegiance to the Lord.

He actually did, and this pleased God. God subsequently did not allow him to do such an awful thing. He provided a ram for Abraham to sacrifice instead of his Son Isaac.

For this reason Abraham called that place Jehovahjireh, meaning ‘The LORD provided’ (Genesis 22:14 KJV). This is the first instance where we see God being referred to as Jehovah (YHWH). It would then remain to be the ultimate name for God The Father.

After man turned himself away from God, God was grieved because He loved man so much. He had to devise a way to bring man back to Him. And He did.

Apparently, there was a meeting in heaven and God, The Son, decided to take the arduous task to come down to earth to save man. This was a weighty decision to make because taking the sin of the world is not a walk in the park even though Jesus was God. Here is where we encounter God The Son.

The Holy Spirit

Then comes God The Spirit, often known as the Holy Spirit. He is first encountered at the very beginning of the Word. Before anything was created the earth was formless and desolate. The Spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters (Genesis 1:2 KJV). He is also associated with the creation of the earth and everything that is contained in it because as God spoke He executed.

The three may seem different but act as one. Take a look at what John writes about Jesus Christ in the very first verse of his account of the gospel. 

In the beginning, was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was fully God. 

(John 1:1 KJV)

We see that Christ is the Word, He was there with God in the beginning, oversaw the creation of the earth, and most pertinently, He was entirely God. This example shows that Jesus Christ is God. There are dozens of other instances where we see the interconnection of God the Father and God the Son.

John’s deep insight on the connection between the Godhead

A couple of chapters down in the same book of John we see profound and intriguing revelations. Taking a close look at John chapter 6 verses 22 onwards, we see how Jesus links Himself to the Father.

He says that the Father sent Him and He does not do His own will, but that of Him who sent Him (verse 38). In verse 46, Jesus says that He has seen the Father, which means that He fully understands God the Father.

Furthermore, Philip asks Jesus to reveal the Father to them (John 14:8 KJV). Jesus then tells Him that he who has seen Him has seen the Father. Studying even more, Jesus reveals to them that He is the Father, He is in the Father, and the Father is in Him.

As perplexing as it is, it is as simple as it is. They are one. Jesus also says that the words He speaks are not His own but of the Father that dwells in Him. This is the best way possible to show that God the Son is God the Father.

The link between God, the Spirit and the Son

One last thing here is the link between God The Father, God The Son, and God The Spirit. Picking the same excerpt, Jesus goes on to tell the people that they will receive power when they believe in Him so that they may do even greater works.

Why? So that the Father is glorified in the Son. In verse ten, Jesus says that the Father in Him does the works. But remember the executor is the Holy Spirit. This means that the Father does the works through the Son by the Spirit.

Jesus is aware that He must leave after the job is done because it is expedient that way as the gospel would spread faster with the Holy Spirit rather than Him being there physically. You can find out more about why Jesus had to leave in the article ‘The Holy Spirit in the life of a believer’.

The only way that the disciples would do the will of the Father was the fact that Jesus was physically present with them and that command came through Him. Jesus and His disciples understood this and they couldn’t do without Him after He departed.

In verse 15, Jesus says that if they loved Him then they should keep His commandments. They certainly could not do that without Him!

Jesus Himself as the promised helper

Jesus then promised a helper―The Holy Spirit who would help them keep the commands. As Jesus was with them physically, The Spirit would be with them spiritually (verse 16) and therefore Jesus would be with them forever.

In verse 18, Jesus says that He would come to them. How then would He come and has already finished His job and left? He would come through the Holy Spirit. Verse 20 gives a dynamic explanation of the resultant connection with a fourth entity added―the believer.

A dynamic connection

The Son is in the Father, the believer in the Son, and the Son is in the believer through the Holy Spirit. So, the believer would receive the Father’s Word directly (verse 24).

Another chapter that perfectly explains this is chapter 16. Verses 13 onwards show that the Holy Spirit, the Son (who is speaking), and the Father are one. Jesus says that all things that the Father has are His and the Holy Spirit would take of His (the Father’s) and show it to them.

In verse 16, Jesus says “A little while, and you shall not see me, (which means that He had a short time before He ascended) and again a little while, and you shall see me” (this would be Jesus, the Son in the form of the Holy Spirit).

Jesus was not an ordinary person!

All this shows that they are one and act as one. The icing on the cake is that Jesus Christ was sired by the Holy Spirit (Luke 1:35). The Holy Spirit is the reason why Jesus Christ was an extra-ordinary man.

This interconnection is an intricate connection that every believer should understand. It will help them know that God is one and the three parties work in immaculate harmony.
